The Afterlife of the Azure Kingfisher

I was, for my sins, a guest of the Byron Bay Readers’ and Writers’ Festival, back in August. It was my second Byron showing. I ran a poetry workshop: “Throwing Soft Bombs”; I read and talked with Mike Ladd and John Tranter; I spoke about nests with Gay Bilson and Janine Burke; and I read again at the celebrations for the tenth anniversary of Dangerously Poetic. Then I caught the plan home with the Rabbitohs, fresh from a win over the Titans on the Gold Coast.

Northerly, the magazine of the Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre, host of the festival, asked me if they could publish a poem or two, and I gave them “Casting Shadows in Early April” and “Still Life; or, The Afterlife of the Azure Kingfisher”. You can find them in the September, October issue.
