An extract from The Blue Plateau appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald two weeks back (Spectrum, 20 June). 

Now there’s a nice review (4 July). Claire Scobie thinks my book sets “a new benchmark for nature writing in Australia” and that she feels it “reclothes a familiar landscape in striking poetic prose”; thank you, Claire. But the book’s ideas and construction have been better understood, and its music better heard, by other readers—people close to me and many others I’ve never met, who’ve emailed to speak of how the book has struck them. I’m humbled by these readings, and I’m glad of the review, though I have to say Scobie didn’t really find the book I wrote.
