Okay, indulge me here.

The last time the Dragons won the grand final, I was in my last year of high school. That was thirty-one years ago. A bit has happened since.

If I had tears in my eyes watching my team win yesterday (late at night in my motel room, in replay, after the closing dinner at the Tasmanian Poetry Festival), it wasn’t just them I wept for.

It may only have been a football game, and it’s certainly not going to slow global warming. Nor is it going to teach people what poems are for. But it felt very good. Thanks, lads.

Some joys you work for; others you wait for. Sometimes you wait a good while.
